European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
